Import-Export Code Registration
Export Code, or more specifically the Import Export Code (IEC Code) is a unique 10-digit identification number that is issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Dept. of Commerce, Govt. of India. It is a license that is required if you want to open a business that deals with import and export of goods from India.
The 10-digit IEC code has a validity for a lifetime and registering for an IEC code is one of the prerequisites for opening an import export business. Whenever you are sending or receiving money for the goods that you have imported or exported respectively, then you need to show your IEC code to the bank to complete the transaction. Similarly, whenever you are exporting your goods or importing goods, then you need to show your IEC code to the custom department or port.

How to register for IEC Code?
- You can register for IEC Code either online through DGFT’s official website or by visiting your regional office.
- Get the required application form and fill .
- Submit all the required documents, address proof, identity proof, cancel cheque copies of current account, and other required details.
- Complete the application and register with DGFT using Digital Signature Certificate/Aadhar OTP verification.
- Pay the application fee and download the soft copy of your application approval. Once you submit your online application, it will take around 1-2 days to get the code.
Note that, you do not require an IEC Code if you are importing or exporting goods for personal use.
